Ginny Buechele / www.usgennet.org / domains-go

As I have written about before one of my heroes is Ginny Buechele. Ginny led a campaign for a couple of years to demand that the Dutchess County Executive and the County Legislature fill the empty vacancy of County Historian. If you want to follow the whole event you can read the rootsweb Dutchess County archived messages. It is a lesson in civic duty and perseverance.

The reason I am mentioning her again is that she has just announced that she will be the host and moderator for the growing non-profit internet based group called USGenNet for Dutchess and Putnam counties. As you might know I have been promoting the USGenWeb sites for quite a long time, however your research should also take advantage of the excellent resources at www.usgennet.org/usa/ny[whatever county name]/, such as the following: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ny/county/putnam/

The following is from Ginny's announcement:
"This is a NONPROFIT genealogical/historical research site hosted by USGenNet, a NONPROFIT, TAX-EXEMPT public benefit corporation, and is in full compliance with USGenNet's Conditions of use including NO CLAIM to the copyrights of individual submitters.

The Message Boards, which are now moderated boards will be updated shortly - Please be patient while I learn the ins and outs of this procedure. The USGenNet Boards were being overwhelmed with pornographic postings and spam, both of which violate USGenNet's Policies and Conditions of Use. In an effort to prevent these posts from appearing on the USGenNet Server in the future, it was ordered by the USGenNet President that henceforth, all USGenNet WebBBS message boards will be pre-configured for moderated posts only. This went into effect on January 26, 2006.

You will ALWAYS retain ownership of any vital historical submitted data and same will be removed from the site upon your request to me to do so [no questions asked] and will never be used for commercial purposes nor will a fee be used to access them."

Parts of Some New York State Census Starting to Appear on Ancestry.com

Well this is exciting!

Some parts of two of the New York State Censuses are starting to show up at Ancestry.com.

If you are a subscriber to Ancestry, and you go to BROWSE, CENSUS, then go down until you find: New York State Census Collection, you will see that 1880, 1892 and 1905 show up.

Now don't get too excitied yet, it is in no way complete, but it is a start. The ones that I looked at were only partially presented, for instance, 1892 counties of Broome, Chautauqua, Essex, Herkimer, Lewis, Orleans, Rockland, Schoarie, Warren, Wayne and Not Stated. Of those that I quickly scanned, the condition is very poor to say the least, but I do not believe this is any fault of the scanning process. It looks like the source documents were in poor condition and then filmed poorly. However, "some" of the information can be found and perhaps you will get lucky.

I also took a quick look at 1905. The counties presented are; Lewis, Orleans, Schoharie, Warren, Wayne and Not Stated. The condition of the ones I looked at were generally a little better than the 1892.

I did not look at the 1880 yet, but presume this is from the State copy of the Federal Census and of those that I have used in the past they are a slimmed down version of the National Archives film version, but you should look at it any way because you WILL find discrepencies in data that you have previously located on the 1880 Federal version.
