Searching for your Roots Among the Vines of the Finger Lakes Country.

Genealogy Research in the Finger Lakes area of New York State.

The winter time is a gorgeous time to see the Finger Lakes, and participate in many of the Winter Sports activities that are being held all winter long. However, if you are going to plan a Family History research trip to the Finger Lakes in warmer weather, there is no time like the present to start gathering information to make that plan with.

The Spring time, Summer and Fall are breathtaking for natural beauty, and to visit all the hills and dales, lakes and streams, that your ancestors enjoyed, and where all future generations will as well. Upstate New York has everything that is beautiful and interesting, such as the Adirondack Mountains, the Catskill Mountain Region, the Mohawk Valley and the Hudson River Valley, however, our all time favorite is the Finger Lakes Region.

You probably already have some ideas as to where you might want to travel as far as museums, court houses, historical societies, and libraries, and we also recommend looking at some excellent resources that are free and on-line to help you with your planning. Keep checking this UNYG Blog from time to time as we will be reviewing many of the Historical Archives that you might want to not miss.

An excellent website to use for your planning is www.fingerlakes.org where you may gather information on each of the fourteen counties that comprise the Finger Lakes Region; Cayuga, Chemung, Cortland, Livingston, Monroe, Onondaga, Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins, Wayne and Yates counties are all included. From the same website you may download informational brochures and photographs, as well as finding out where to stay, what to see, and what to do. Incidentally for all you Genealogaholics, did you know that there is a Finger Lakes rootsweb mail list? You can subscribe to it for free by sending an email to NYFingerLakes-L-request@rootsweb.com. Put just one word subscribe in the subject line and also in the message body. Do not have any other text or items in the message. Then every time someone posts a message to the mail list it will appear in your mailbox.

The tourism offices and chambers of commerce that are described at the fingerlakes.org website will also have ideas on Hotels, Car Rental, Airlines and Airports in the area, or they will also have recommendations for camping and park facilities as well.

This is the heart of wine country and there are many major wineries of National fame, as well as a great many small private wineries that will each offer some particular specialties. Here is where you can learn all about New York Wineries. If adult beverages are not on your list of things to partake in then you might just want to consider visiting one of those establishments and stock up on fresh made Grape Juice, all yummy!
